With a months worth of rain forecast to fall in just a couple of days I decided to get out for a few hours with the camera before the bad weather arrived.
I had a quick look on the moors for Barn Owls but couldn’t find any that were active so I headed over to the coast at Hummersea. I had one particular shot in mind but the conditions weren’t quite right so I left with just a reference shot for a future image that should work under the right conditions.

Hummersea Between Boulby And Skinningrove
I took the short drive down the road to Boulby and by the time I got there, the conditions had come right for the shot back at Hummersea. Rather than running about like a blue assed fly I decided to stick it out on the cliff top at Boulby before heading down the coast back towards Whitby.
At Boulby, the late evening sun, now setting in the west behind me was lighting up the cliffs at Staithes, which is just what I wanted. Its always a spectacular scene when the last sunlight of the day works its magic on the boulder clay and Sandstone cliffs of The Yorkshire Coast.

As I drove back to Whitby I was getting tired and felt like I should head straight home. The night had been pretty average in terms of photography but as I drove through Sandsend the sky to the north and west of the village was just too nice to miss so I made a stop of about 60 minutes to take some twilight shots of the village.
I think of all the photographs I take, the twilight shots are usually my favourite. There really is something very special about The Whitby area in midsummer. The light in The Northern sky seems to linger for hours and its a beautiful time of day to wander about and immerse yourself in The Beauty Of The Yorkshire Coast.

Lovely shots as always Glenn.
I stopped in almost the exact same spot the other night, looking down from Boulby. Been walking on the beach at grove, met a nice chap called Mel that told me a bit more about the history of the slag heaps on the beach, which are now abundant with birds nesting.
It’s a forgotten part of the area…..
Hope you and the family are well.
Thank-you Caroline, I saw you posted some shots of Skinni the other day. Its a great place. perhaps the last part of The Yorkshire Coast which remains as it has been for half a century or more. The only other place I can think of that remains really untouched is the area around Flamborough 🙂 and long may it remain that way.
Fantastic shots Glenn- you’re right there is something magical about the light at that time of night.
The sky seems to hang onto the light until well after midnight, and then by about 2.30am its starting to come light again in the north east sky. I guess wer’e not so far south from the areas that get 24hr sunlight in summer.
Love seeing these photos Glenn, Whitby was a big part of my life for 65 years but an unable to get there nowadays. It helps seeing your wonderful photos. Thank you
