Description

Part of my Storm Surge Collection, dramatic scenes of huge waves battering the piers at Whitby during the storm surge of January 13th 2017. This photograph was taken from the safety of The Haggerlythe at the end of Henrietta street, however you could feel the power of the waves even from such a high vantage point.

Although amazing to watch, I was always very much aware that only a hundred or so feet below me, mother nature was doing here worst, and if I got on her way then my days would soon be numbered.

Having watched many storms here at Whitby, Im not sure if Ive seen many that brought worse conditions. Although the Storm Surge of December 2013 brought more flooding to the upper harbour, i can say for certain that the sea that day was nowhere near as rough as this one. Waves and water level cleared being controlled by very different factors, the waves being created by storm force winds out in the North Sea whilst the water surge itself is caused by the intensity of the low pressure pushing water into the North Sea from the Area around North East Scotland.
