I was on one of my walks, looking for images as I wander around town. The Goth Weekend usually turns up something a bit different, but what came next really was quite unexpected.
I met a couple of youngsters who were doing some sort of jumping around the walls near The Spa Pavilion. The first jump I saw them do was down near the archways that lead to Upgang sea wall. I have to admit that I was at first shocked by what I was seeing. the drop the other side of the wall is well in excess of 100ft and I know there have been a couple of deaths there over the years.
After watching for a while I became more at ease with what I was seeing, the lads were clearly in fantastic shape with all the agility, balance and body strength that you would expect to find in an olympic gymnast.
After a while I got chatting with the lads and they explained they were with family in Whitby but actually originate from Manchester. One of the guys Tom explained that what they were doing was called “Parkour” and that he was in fact a Parkour instructor back home in Manchester. Tom handed me a card for his business. You can look him up at www.projectzparkour.com or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/projectzparkour
Whilst out I got to thinking about how I could post the pictures on my Facebook Group. After all I only have to post some pics of me sat near a cliff edge or on the piers when its rough and you get the health and safety zealots wanting to give you a lecture.
Add to that, the need of a lot of people in Whitby to chastise anything slightly different or out of their comfort zones and it would be a recipe for disaster to even attempt to post these on my photography group.
For that reason, Ive posted this little story on my blog. I had a few heart in mouth moments watching these guys in action. But in reality they really made my day. Once again Whitby has come up trumps and provided me with something unique and special to enjoy and take photographs of.
