We are very quickly moving towards mid summer in Whitby and the Sun is setting well out into the North Sea.

Many people question the possibility of a sunset into the sea on an east facing coast. The lay of the land here at Whitby makes us quite unique as an east coast town. Believe it or not we actually face north. hence the town has an east side and a west side separated by The River Esk.

If you sail out of the harbour mouth you are on a setting of due north. if you look left to Sandsend your facing West and if you look right to Saltwick your facing East.

In mid summer the sun rises from the sea off Saltwick nab in the east, and then later in the day it sets into the sea off Sandsend Ness in the west.

These photographs were taken from Hawsker Lane looking over the Abbey towards Sandsend. The sunset is getting later by the day now, and this one was at 9.32pm.
