Welcome to The Glenn Kilpatrick Photography Blog.

The Fog, mist and sea fret of spring and early summer can become a real pain at Whitby. Sometimes, just 10 miles inland it can be baking hot sunshine yet on the coast were struggling to get temperatures into double figures. A grey, damp mist fills the air, and its depressing. Often I’ll get inland on such days, Dalby forrest can make a nice change or a rise up the Esk Valley. Often you dont have to go far away from the coast to loose the fog.

Im not sure of the exact dynamics of it all, but its something to do with the contrast between sea and land temperatures, and then if you get a breeze off the sea, usually an east or north east wind then we get the fog.

Occasionally you get this strange phenomenon where the Fog is patchy. Somedays it just sits in the river valley and you can see across the top of it. Some days its patchy and sticks to the towns headlands.

Yesterday, Monday 14th March 2016, was one of those days. I needed to go into town to collect some prints from Picture Esk on Flowergate (Did I mention I shop locally ??). As I headed out i noticed it was sunny above but I couldn’t see the Abbey. That meant the strange mist was hanging about.

I grabbed a take away coffee from Clara’s and headed to Spion kop for a view over the town. The mist was just clearing from the upper harbour, It was strong sunlight and very warm. So warm infact it felt like T shirt weather. I could see the upper harbour but still the Abbey was hidden, but every now and again it poked its head through the clouds.

When this happens it can make for some really awesome photographs. below are just a selection of what i took on the day. The remainder can, as always, be viewed over on my Facebook Group. As always, these images are for sale. Please email me at whitbyphotography1@gmail.com for more details. You may also find some of the images in my online photography shop here.
